Makati City Mayor Abby Binay on Thursday announced the launch of a new city program offering free bus rides to public school students, aimed at addressing daily commuting difficulties and improving access to education.

The city government has acquired six new school buses to operate across key barangays, providing safe and scheduled transportation exclusively for students enrolled in Makati's public schools.

"With this new initiative, we are making it easier for students to get to school safely and on time so they can focus on learning," Binay said.

Each bus will follow a fixed route with designated pick-up and drop-off points. Students will be required to present ID cards when boarding, and parents can receive real-time updates through GPS tracking systems installed in each vehicle. Licensed drivers and trained transport aides will ensure the safety and welfare of students onboard.

The program will begin with a pilot run in selected barangays and schools with high student populations and commuting challenges. Prior to its citywide implementation, consultations with school officials, parents, and barangay leaders will be conducted to finalize routes and safety protocols.

City officials said the initiative aims to reduce tardiness and absenteeism, cut transportation expenses for low-income families, and promote equal access to quality education for all Makati students. with ALVIN MURCIA
