The influential Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) religious group has reportedly endorsed the local slate of former Manila Mayor Isko Moreno, according to sources familiar with the decision.
While the endorsement was not publicly announced, news of the INC’s support spread quickly Saturday afternoon. In Manila, INC endorsements are traditionally considered significant and often provide a substantial advantage to endorsed candidates.
Out of the 36 available councilor positions, the INC reportedly selected 26 candidates across all six districts.
Moreno is running under the Aksyon Demokratiko party, which he now leads. All his party members were also members of the party during his 2022 presidential campaign.
Moreno is running against incumbent Mayor Honey Lacuna, who formerly headed the Asenso Manileño party. The two leaders split after disagreements over political plans.
