The Diocesan Shrine and Parish of the Immaculate Conception in Malabon City is set to receive a "spiritual affiliation" from Rome, allowing local churchgoers to receive a pilgrimage blessing similar to those in the Italian capital.
Caloocan Bishop Pablo Virgilio Cardinal David announced in a homily Wednesday during the installation of the parish’s new priest that the Malabon church will receive the "Special Bond of Spiritual Affinity" with the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, the largest Marian church in Rome.
“If we are recognized as having a bond of affinity with Santa Maria Maggiore, churchgoers who visit here will feel as though they are going on a pilgrimage to Santa Maria Maggiore,” David said.
The cardinal added that the plenary indulgence received at the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore will also be recognized in Malabon for a lifetime, not only during jubilee years.
“A few days ago, I received the letter, and this church will be declared as the sister church of Santa Maria Maggiore,” the cardinal continued, drawing applause from the congregation.
He said the local diocese will prepare a large Marian feast to publicly recognize the certificate that will be presented to the Conception Diocesan Parish and Shrine.
