The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has called for dialogue with transport group Manibela ahead of its planned three-day strike starting Monday, 24 March. The agency said it recognizes the group’s right to voice its concerns and has instructed Assistant Secretary Dioscoro “Jojo” Reyes to meet with transport representatives as soon as possible.
In a statement, the DOTr emphasized its preference for discussions over protests, urging cooperation to ensure commuter safety while protecting the welfare of drivers and operators. The agency also assured the public that contingency measures, including free rides in coordination with the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and local government units, are being prepared to minimize disruptions.
Manibela has organized the strike to protest what it claims are misleading jeepney consolidation figures presented by the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) and the DOTr. The transport group has been vocal against the government's Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP), arguing that it threatens the livelihood of small operators.
The DOTr said the concerns of the transport sector regarding the PUVMP will be discussed further in a sit-down meeting with relevant government agencies.
