Meralco unit taps partner vs threats

Radius Telecoms Inc. (Radius), a telecom subsidiary of Meralco, recently launched a new distributed denial of service (DDoS) scrubbing center at its international point-of-presence in Hong Kong.

This significant development strengthens Radius’ security measures for its business-to-business (B2B) direct internet access service, ensuring enhanced protection against the growing threat of DDoS attacks. These attacks involve flooding websites with fake requests that prevent legitimate users from accessing it.

For this critical security initiative, Radius partnered with Nexusguard, a global leader in DDoS cybersecurity solutions headquartered in Singapore, and Total Information Management (TIM) to enhance and boost Radius’ capabilities to curb malicious traffic on its network.

Nexusguard’s 2024 Autumn Report highlighted the escalating severity of DDoS attacks globally, with the average attack size increasing by 135 percent and durations growing by 163 percent year-on-year. Without coordinated efforts from end-users, providers, governments, and other stakeholders, this trend is expected to escalate further.

Repel attacks in real time

“This new investment allows us to block DDoS attacks in real-time that also impacts our target latency in our traffic routing. The availability of scrubbing centers within our network guarantees that we maintain high reliability of our internet service and protect our low-latency commitment to our enterprise customers,” according to Radius OIC-chief operating officer Al Solis.

“Radius is doing its share as an internet provider to employ solutions internally that will strengthen cybersecurity and data protection at network layer, but we expect our enterprise customers to have their own solid security protocols in place in their own network as the cyberattacks will continue to rise and will become more sophisticated and nefarious in the coming years,” Solis added.

“This collaboration with Radius underscores the importance of working together to address the growing threat of DDoS attacks. By combining our expertise with Radius’ robust network infrastructure, we aim to provide enterprises with the reliable protection they need to safeguard their customers and maintain uninterrupted operations,” said Nexusguard chief technology officer Juniman Kasman.
