Victoria International Container Terminal (VICT), operated by International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) at the Port of Melbourne, has purchased four new hybrid automatic container carriers (ACCs) from Kalmar to increase capacity and reduce emissions.

VICT has placed an order for new hybrid carriers scheduled for delivery in 2025, each capable of lifting up to 60 tons and incorporating Kalmar's latest hybrid technology with lithium-ion batteries for energy recovery.

This technology is expected to improve energy efficiency by 40 percent and reduce CO2 emissions by 50 tons annually per carrier.

Bruno Porchietto, CEO of VICT, expressed appreciation for the partnership with Kalmar, highlighting how the new hybrid carriers will help increase VICT's annual capacity to 1.5 million TEUs. He emphasized that the investment aligns with the terminal's focus on customer satisfaction, innovation, and sustainability.

VICT, the Southern Hemisphere's only fully automated container terminal, continues to expand technologically to meet rising demand. It operates an array of advanced equipment, including seven remotely controlled cranes and 26 automated stacking cranes, all equipped with energy recovery systems to enhance operational efficiency and minimize environmental impact.

This investment follows a milestone for VICT in 2024, marking the handling of its five millionth TEU since opening in 2017.
