The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Sunday revealed that close to 3,000 police officers were sanctioned in 2024 for various violations committed while on duty.
Official data showed 5,457 officers faced administrative charges in 3,751 cases. Of these, 2,765 were penalized while 2,691 were exonerated.
In a statement, the PNP said that at least 1,112 officers, including a colonel, 19 lieutenant colonels, 29 majors, 30 captains and 22 lieutenants have been suspended, while 903 police officers were dismissed.
Demoted police officers were pegged at 108, while 103 cops faced forfeiture of salaries.
Meantime, at least 423 police officers were reprimanded; 82 cops faced restrictions and 34 officers have been withheld of privileges.
Separately, 20 active-duty officers were placed under restrictive custody for their involvement in a high-profile 2022 drug bust in Manila.
The PNP stressed that its internal reforms are guided by the Internal Disciplinary Mechanism, which includes preventive, punitive, and restorative approaches to address misconduct and rehabilitate personnel.
In other developments, police arrested five drug suspects and seized P8 million worth of illegal drugs in separate operations in Metro Manila and Pampanga over the weekend.
In Manila, the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) reported the arrest of a 40-year-old drug suspect during a buy-bust operation in Barangay 513, Sampaloc. Authorities confiscated 44 kilograms of suspected dried marijuana valued at P5.28 million, along with buy-bust money and a sack used to conceal the drugs.
In Pampanga, Police Regional Office-3 (Central Luzon) director Brig. Gen. Jean Fajardo said four suspects, including a high-value individual, were apprehended in Barangay Cabetican, Bacolor. Confiscated items included 402 grams of shabu worth P2.73 million, firearms, ammunition and a vehicle.
All arrested suspects are facing drug and other related charges.
