Coroner's Findings and Legal Proceedings

Dr. Roberto Victor Cohen confirmed that Payne died of polytrauma, a medical term describing multiple traumatic injuries affecting various body parts or organ systems. The inquest into his death in the UK has been adjourned until a pre-inquest review scheduled for 6 November 2025.

Senior Coroner Crispin Butler noted that investigations in Argentina are still ongoing, and acquiring additional details about Payne's death could take time through the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.

Payne fell from the third-floor balcony of the Casa Sur Hotel after a night involving alcohol and drug use. Reports revealed he had initially considered staying in a first-floor room but later moved to a third-floor suite, where the fatal incident occurred.

An internal hotel memo, first published by Argentinian media, indicated that Payne’s friend Roger Nores preferred the first-floor room. However, Payne ultimately chose room 310, where the accident happened.

Charges Filed Against Hotel Staff and Friend

Five individuals, including hotel staff and Payne’s friend Roger Nores, have been charged in connection with his death. The hotel's manager Gilda Martin, receptionist Esteban Grassi, and Nores face manslaughter charges, while employee Ezequiel Pereyra and waiter Braian Paiz have been charged with supplying cocaine.

Court documents indicate the receptionist allegedly instructed others to 'drag' Payne to his hotel room despite his impaired state. The manager is accused of failing to secure Payne’s safety, while Nores reportedly abandoned him, knowing his condition and struggles with addiction.

Judge Laura Bruniard emphasized that there was no evidence of premeditation or intent to harm Payne but highlighted that their actions created a situation that put his life at risk.

Payne's Legacy and Funeral

Payne rose to international fame as part of One Direction before launching a solo career. His debut album, LP1, released in December 2019, featured hit singles such as Polaroid and Strip That Down featuring Quavo.

His funeral, held in November 2024 in Buckinghamshire, was attended by his former bandmates Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan, and Louis Tomlinson, as well as Cheryl Tweedy, the mother of his son Bear.
