Overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) have varying ways to celebrate the Yuletide season. So far away from their families, some celebrate with friends and colleagues; others stay inside their room and connect via video call home.
Camilla Iman, publisher of WOW Dream International Media, has been in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), for a decade now.
“I have been away from my family for 10 long years, celebrating 10 Christmases and 10 New Years without the warmth of their presence. Although they visit me occasionally, each holiday still feels like a piece of my heart is missing, a reminder of the cherished moments we can no longer share together,” she said.
Camilla said while she has grown accustomed to the distance, the emotions, especially during Christmas, never fully fade.
“Each holiday brings a wave of nostalgia and a bittersweet ache that reminds me of the laughter and love I miss so deeply. Even during their visits, the longing for the everyday moments we used to share lingers, and there are times when the weight of it all feels overwhelming,” confessed Camilla.
Apparently in Dubai, the holidays are a dazzling display of lights and celebrations, yet they can feel hollow without her family around. “I try to immerse myself in the festivities, attending community gatherings and finding solace in the kindness of friends. However, in the quiet moments, I often reflect on the journey I have taken, overcoming countless challenges and relying on my faith and the guidance of the Great Creator to see me through,” she said.

Yet, amidst the sorrow, I find strength in the lessons learned and the resilience forged in adversity. My faith has been a guiding light, reminding me that every struggle has a purpose and that love knows no boundaries, even when miles apart,” she added.
