The Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) on Saturday has issued an official statement denying the allegations made by Dr. Tony Leachon on social media regarding an alleged excessive budget for the agency's Christmas celebrations.

The health insurance provider labeled the accusations as "malicious" and clarified that the claims were based on misinformation.

The agency emphasized its compliance with Malacañang's directive to scale down Christmas celebrations in light of austerity measures. According to PhilHealth, Management Advisory No. 2024-003, issued on November 25, 2024, directed all offices, including regional branches, to adopt cost-saving practices during holiday events. The advisory also led to the cancellation of certain activities, with savings redirected to aid communities severely affected by recent typhoons.

PhilHealth further clarified that the budget breakdown cited by Dr. Leachon pertains not to the Christmas celebrations but to preparations for its upcoming 30th-anniversary activities in 2025. The milestone year, themed “Panatag Kami Dito!," will feature year-round, nationwide events aligned with the observance of National Health Insurance Month, as declared under Proclamation 1400, s. 2007.

“These activities will involve employees, stakeholders, champions, advocates, and our members,” the agency stated, adding that the events are designed to engage the public and promote awareness of reforms under the Universal Health Care law.

PhilHealth assured the public that the approved activities are within budgetary limits set by the government and will adhere to procurement processes under Republic Act 9184. The planned initiatives are expected to highlight enhancements in benefit packages and strengthen engagement with members and stakeholders.

In its statement, PhilHealth urged Dr. Leachon to exercise caution and responsibility in making public statements, noting the potential for misinformation to mislead the public.

The agency reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and prudence in managing members’ contributions, assuring stakeholders that their funds are being handled with integrity and accountability.
