The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Sunday revealed that the situation at the EDSA Shrine has calmed down as the number of supporters of the Duterte family dwindled to around 20.

PNP spokesperson Police Brigadier General Jean Fajardo said that no untoward incidents have been reported since the supporters started gathering at the shrine last Tuesday.

“As of 7 a.m. this morning, it was quiet around the EDSA Shrine,” Fajardo said in a radio interview.

“We have around 200 personnel monitoring there, but among the rallyists, only around 20 were left. Although this is a small number, we are still keeping an eye on them,” she added.

Some supporters held a program until 1 a.m. to express their support for Vice President Sara Duterte and former President Rodrigo Duterte. They said they wanted to dedicate a day to voice their opinions on recent events in the country.

The PNP, however, warned that it would intervene if the gathering caused significant traffic disruptions.

Police also released a video alleging that some supporters were offered money to participate in the gathering. Some supporters have denied these claims.

The EDSA Shrine was established in 1989 as a memorial to Mary, Queen of Peace, who is believed to have played a role in the peaceful People Power Revolution that ousted former President Ferdinand Marcos Sr. in 1986. It is also known as the “Holy Ground” after another peaceful People Power event in 2001.
