Bong Go advocates for welfare of barangay health workers

Senator Christopher "Bong" Go gave a message of support to all barangay health workers (BHWs). He emphasized their crucial role and steadfast efforts in bringing healthcare closer to communities while highlighting their unwavering service and sacrifices.

During the 24th General Assembly of the Davao City Federation of Barangay Health Workers Inc. held at the Davao City Recreation Center on Friday, 15 December, Go, through his representative, committed to continue fighting for the welfare of BHWs throughout the country.

"Hindi maikakaila ang inyong dedikasyon at sipag bilang mga Barangay Health Workers. Kayo ang nagsisilbing gabay at lakas ng ating mga komunidad, lalo na sa mga panahon ng krisis," he stated, recognizing them as the guiding force and strength of communities, especially during crises.

To address the needs and rights of these vital community workers, Go announced his filing of Senate Bill No. 427 or the Barangay Health Workers Compensation Act. This legislation aims to ensure proper compensation and benefits for BHWs.

"Ang layunin ng batas na ito ay hindi lamang magbigay ng monthly honorarium, kundi pati na rin ang mga allowances, privileges, pati Christmas bonus, annual training, at iba pa," he explained.

Go's bill proposes to provide BHWs a monthly honorarium, along with a comprehensive package of benefits, including allowances, job security, regular training, and skill development opportunities.

The proposed benefits are seen as an extension and enhancement of the existing benefits under Republic Act 7883, or the Barangay Health Workers' Benefits and Incentives Act of 1995, which already provides various incentives to BHWs.

The bill, if enacted, also extends benefits from key institutions such as the Government Service Insurance System, the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation, and the Pag-IBIG Fund.

The proposed legislation complements the already enforced Department of the Interior and Local Government-Department of Health Joint Memorandum Circular on BHWs.

Go then pledged to do his best to advance this bill, acknowledging the critical role of BHWs during the pandemic and emphasizing the need to focus on their welfare.

"Gagawin ko ang aking makakaya upang maisulong ang panukalang ito," he affirmed.

In a time of numerous challenges, Go called upon the BHWs to continue being the beacon and strength in their communities. He assured them of his ongoing support for their aspirations and needs.

"Sana po ay patuloy kayong maging ilaw at lakas sa inyong mga komunidad. At bilang inyong lingkod-bayan, asahan ninyo ang aking patuloy na suporta sa inyong adhikain at pangangailangan," he encouraged.

Concluding his speech, Go extended his gratitude to the BHWs for their relentless service.

"Maraming salamat po sa inyong walang-sawang paglilingkod. Mabuhay po kayong lahat!" he said, celebrating their invaluable contribution to the nation's health and well-being.

Tokens were also distributed by Go's Malasakit Team to select recipients during the event.
