The Department of Transportation announced on Monday that the Ninoy Aquino International Airport terminals are currently under increased security alert status following the bomb explosion at the Mindanao State University on Sunday.
DoTr Secretary Jaime Bautista said that the intensified security measures will be implemented not only in airports but also in other terminals for other modes of public transport.
Meantime, the Philippine National Police Aviation Security Group at the NAIA terminals said that it will strengthen police patrols and intelligence gatherings as they are now on enhanced alert.
It added that numerous members of the Special Operations Unit and Explosive Ordnance Disposal Teams along with their bomb-sniffing dogs were sent to patrol the surroundings of NAIA round-the-clock.
This included the departure zones where departing passengers and senders are located.
"As we empathize with the victims' families of the recent Marawi bombing incident, the Office for Transportation Security has implemented enhanced security protocols at different transport facilities to protect travelers," said OTS officer-in-charge Jose A. Briones Jr.
"We advise the public to remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings. We urge our transport stakeholders — airlines, airports, seaports, ships, buses, bus terminal operators, railways, and toll operators — to strictly implement the baseline security measures written in your respective security plans," he added.
Briones said that during the heightened alert status, OTS compiled a list of travel tips to help passengers have a better, more accessible, safe, affordable and environmentally responsible travel experience.
Travelers must refrain from bringing objects with sharp points or edges that are strictly prohibited in carry-on luggage; they are only allowed for check-in and all liquids, aerosols, and gels are prohibited on hand-carry bags and the only ones exempted are medicines and milk juices for passengers with special needs.
Exemptions may be granted for LAGS that do not exceed the 100-ml limitation. All liquids, aerosols, and gels are to be placed in a container not greater than 100 ml and shall be placed inside a resealable plastic bag not exceeding 1 liter.
