Many state leaders remain well-liked throughout their term because they communicate their vision effectively, prioritize their constituents’ needs, and consistently demonstrate integrity and accountability in their actions.

Choosing well is an effective decision-making process. Successful leaders should master this key trait to make informed choices and ensure continued governance success.

As President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. approaches the final phase of his administration, carefully selecting Cabinet members and other government officials is crucial.

As he crosses the Rubicon in the final years of his term, decisions made now will not only shape current governance but also echo through history, shaping the legacy he desires from his administration.

The right officials can help create policies that promote recovery and ensure sustainable growth. They can elevate what is failing or stagnant. Leaders who are not only experienced but also share a vision aligned with the President’s agenda can drive new initiatives that will have lasting positive effects on the people.

Appointing individuals with integrity and a genuine commitment to public service is crucial for restoring public trust in government. The Marcos administration, like many before it, faces scrutiny, and appointing proven, principled officials can help counter skepticism about motives and standards of governance.

I recall supporting President Marcos when he ran for vice president, when only a handful of us visited him in his office on Roxas Boulevard — and when people avoided him after he lost in the ballot recount. At the time, he would repeatedly explain how he would make the Philippines a highly developed country if he ever became president.

Some of his appointees today had nothing to do with Marcos at all. People who supported his presidential candidacy brought them in. Some are old names from previous administrations.

Transparency and accountability should be at the core of the selection process. The President must prioritize candidates who have demonstrated success in their fields. The right officials can help create policies that promote recovery and ensure sustainable growth. They can elevate what is failing or stagnant.

Leaders who are not only experienced but also share a vision aligned with the President’s agenda can drive initiatives that will have lasting positive effects on the population.

Marcos may consider diversity in representation. By selecting officials from various backgrounds — whether in gender, economic status, or geographic location — he can rebuild a Cabinet that better reflects the populace.

Appointing capable individuals aligned with his vision and skilled enough to make it a reality will increase the chances of achieving significant milestones. The leadership has heard the people speak. Now is the time to listen and reconsider.

As we look ahead to the finishing stretch of his administration, President Marcos has a rare opportunity to shape his legacy through the strategic selection of his Cabinet and other government officials. By prioritizing merit, integrity, diversity, and innovation, he not only reinforces public trust but also lays the groundwork for a lasting legacy.
