The Motorcycle Development Program Participants Association Inc. (MDPPA) teamed up with the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) to help law enforcers identify counterfeit motorcycle parts that could put riders at risk.

The groups held a product identification seminar in Puerto Princesa, Palawan, on 18 September. The session capped a three-day intellectual property workshop organized by IPOPHL and the National Committee on Intellectual Property Rights.

Representatives from MDPPA member companies showed participants how to distinguish genuine components from fake products. Kawasaki Motors Philippines discussed brake pads and brake shoes, while Honda Philippines covered engine oil. Suzuki Philippines explained identification points for drive belts, while Yamaha Motor Philippines discussed pistons.

MDPPA said these parts are often replaced during motorcycle maintenance, which makes them common targets for counterfeiters. Cheap copies can lead to breakdowns and may also increase the risk of road crashes.

The seminar supports MDPPA’s Tropang MAALAM road safety campaign. The group said better product knowledge among authorities can help prevent fake and substandard parts from reaching motorcycle owners.

MDPPA also said counterfeit parts are more than an intellectual property issue. A fake brake pad or poorly made piston can fail while a motorcycle is on the road, with potentially serious consequences for the rider.
