The Philippine National Police (PNP) has intensified its campaign against cybercrime following an increase in the number of Filipino families reporting victimization, PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. said Tuesday.
Nartatez directed the Anti-Cybercrime Group (ACG) and concerned regional police units to strengthen efforts against online scams, account hacking, cyber fraud and other emerging threats.
The directive follows a Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey showing that cybercrime victimization among Filipino families rose to 8 percent in June from 5.8 percent in March.
The survey, conducted from June 20 to 29 among 1,200 adults nationwide, recorded increases in Metro Manila, the Visayas and Mindanao. Balance Luzon, meanwhile, posted a slight decline.
“Our ACG and concerned regional units have been intensifying cybercrime prevention, investigation, and public awareness efforts, particularly against online scams, account hacking, and other schemes targeting our communities,” Nartatez said.
He also ordered stronger coordination with partner agencies and faster action on complaints.
“We must strengthen coordination with our partners and ensure that complaints are acted upon promptly,” he said.
The SWS survey also showed that victimization from traditional crimes declined nationwide to 10 percent in June from 12.3 percent in March. Reports of street robbery, break-ins, carnapping and physical violence all decreased.
The PNP said the intensified cybercrime campaign is part of efforts to strengthen public safety amid emerging threats, in line with the directives of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla.
“The public can be assured that the PNP remains committed to protecting them not only in the physical environment but also in cyberspace,” Nartatez said.
“We urge everyone to remain vigilant, verify online transactions, protect their personal information, and immediately report suspicious activities. We will continue to pursue cybercriminals and hold them accountable,” he added.
