  • State weather bureau PAGASA on Sunday, 23 August, said it is monitoring three tropical cyclones outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), with one expected to enter on Monday, 24 August.

Typhoon Saudel, one of the three monitored systems, will be given the local name “Obet” once it enters PAR, PAGASA weather specialist Obet Badrina said.

The three systems are former Typhoon Neneng, now internationally known as Gaenari, estimated at 565 kilometers north of Itbayat, Batanes; Typhoon Saudel, estimated at 2,245 kilometers east of Extreme Northern Luzon; and a tropical depression estimated at 1,205 kilometers east of Eastern Visayas.

PAGASA said that while Saudel is unlikely to make landfall, it could enhance the southwest monsoon, or habagat, and bring rains over the western portions of Luzon and the Visayas by Tuesday or Wednesday.

The tropical depression trailing Saudel could also interact with the typhoon, potentially prolonging rainy conditions in parts of the country.

Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon continues to affect Batanes, where a yellow rainfall warning was issued. The province could receive 50 to 100 millimeters of rain from Sunday to Monday.

Metro Manila, the Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, Central Luzon, Rizal, Cavite, Batangas, Occidental Mindoro and the rest of Cagayan Valley may experience scattered rains and thunderstorms due to the southwest monsoon.

The rest of the country may experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms.
