Ernest John Obiena clinched back-to-back gold medals after winning the Stabhochsprung Meeting on Thursday in Jockgrim, Germany.

Obiena, 30, cleared 5.83 meters to capture his second straight title following his triumph at the Halberstadter Hohenflug — 1. Internationales Stabhochsprung-Meeting auf dem Domplatz last Saturday, also in Germany.

Seifeldin Abdelsalam of Qatar also cleared 5.83m but settled for the silver medal on countback.

Ersu Sasma of Turkey claimed the bronze after clearing 5.77m.

Obiena tried to match his season-best mark of 5.85m but fell short after three attempts.

Still, it was mission accomplished for the Asian Games gold medalist as he continued to hover around the 5.80-m mark.

“I cleared 5.83m for the gold in front of a packed J-Town!!!” Obiena said in a social media post.

“Was far from a smooth competition, with some struggles during warm-up and at the earlier bars, but happy to scrape an 80 bar. We continue to work, and now a few training sessions before we go again.”

Obiena is doing everything he can to prepare as he sets his sights on the 20th Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan, from 19 September to 4 October.

The Greece-based pole vaulter will be one of the country’s top medal bets alongside the likes of Olympic champion Carlos Yulo of gymnastics, Annie Ramirez of jiu-jitsu and boxers Nesthy Petecio, Aira Villegas, Carlo Paalam and Eumir Marcial.

He is also poised to join the Lausanne leg of the Diamond League on 20 August where he will test his mettle against the likes of world No. 2 Emmanouil Karalis of Greece and multiple-time world champion Armand Duplantis of Sweden.
