PALO, Leyte – School authorities confiscated a short firearm from a Grade 6 learner who brought it to school in Almeria, Biliran.

Personnel from the Almeria Municipal Police Station said the principal of Pulang Bato Elementary School informed them that a pupil was allegedly found in possession of a short firearm during a school visitation at around 2:50 p.m. on 29 July 2026.

In response, the school principal turned over to the responding police officers a caliber .38 revolver with no ammunition, which had been confiscated from the child's possession.

The responding officers then sought the assistance of the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office (MSWDO) of Almeria and convened the barangay chairman, school principal, and the parent of the child involved.

After the necessary interview, assessment, and counseling, the child was turned over to his parent in accordance with the Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act, while the firearm was brought to the Almeria MPS for proper documentation and appropriate disposition.

Immediately after the incident, the Women and Children Protection Desk of the Almeria PNP conducted a briefing for the pupils of Pulang Bato Elementary School to provide reassurance and emotional support.

Police personnel assured the pupils that the school remains a safe place for learning and encouraged them to immediately report any safety concerns to their teachers, parents, or the police.

Meanwhile, the Biliran Police Provincial Office said it remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all schools throughout the province.

“This Office will continue to strengthen its Safer Schools Initiative through regular school visitations, close coordination with school administrators, local officials, and other stakeholders, as well as sustained community engagement to help prevent similar incidents,” the PNP Biliran said in a statement.

It also encouraged the public to remain calm, vigilant, and cooperative in maintaining peace and order within the community.
