Converge slips past import-less NLEX

Games today:
Make it four in a row for NLEX in Season 50 of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Governors’ Cup.
The Road Warriors repulsed San Miguel Beer, 110-96, on Sunday to stay undefeated in Group A at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
DeQuan Jones led NLEX with 27 points and 10 rebounds as the Road Warriors improved to a 4-0 win-loss record under head coach Jimmy Alapag, matching the all-time franchise best conference start in 2023 under coach Frankie Lim featuring import Jonathan Simmons, 2022 Governors’ Cup under Yeng Guiao and 2016 Governors’ Cup also under Guiao.
Alapag said the 12-day break helped the team polish its plays while keeping the players sharp against a formidable opponent like the Beermen.
“I thought our break was very productive. A lot of credit goes to our staff. I thought they were super helpful in preparing our guys,” Alapag said.
“We came out of the gate with three games in five days. I thought these last 10 or 11 days gave us an opportunity to spend more time together and clean up things both offensively and defensively.”
A triple by Schonny Winston with 10:18 remaining in the second quarter sparked a 14-0 run that turned NLEX’s slim 30-27 lead into a commanding 44-27 advantage.
Robert Hendon gave the Road Warriors their biggest lead of the game at 26 points, 85-59, after converting a layup with 4:47 left in the third quarter.
Winston exploded for 24 points, four rebounds and four assists, while Tony Semerad shot 5-of-8 from the field to finish with 15 points.
George King paced the Beermen with 31 points and eight rebounds, but it wasn’t enough as San Miguel absorbed its first loss of the season-ending conference.
This fourth straight victory by NLEX turns out to be the longest streak so far this season.
