Hosts San Beda University is promising a fresh and interactive experience when Season 102 of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) opens on 13 September at the Mall of Asia Arena.

While keeping the details under wraps, San Beda athletics moderator Fr. Martin Mary Aleman said the opening ceremony will be designed to be more youthful and engaging for students from the 10 member-schools of the Grand Old League with the theme “Strive. Believe. Unite.”

“It will be more attractive to Gen Z and more youthful. It won’t be like the traditional opening ceremonies that are always done in a grand and formal manner,” Aleman said.

“This time, we want more interaction with the people. We want more interaction with the children. We want the audience to feel that they are part of the show and part of the program.”

After the festivities, the Red Lions will immediately get down to business as they open their title-retention bid against powerhouse College of Saint Benilde.

The last time San Beda hosted the country’s oldest collegiate league was in 2016. It capped the season by winning the title behind the likes of Robert Bolick, Calvin Oftana and Javee Mocon.

Aside from the opening ceremony, Aleman said the hosts are working to ensure that the entire season meets a higher standard, with the NCAA aiming to provide an experience comparable to international competitions.

“We are to be at par with the international leagues. We are following their patterns,” Aleman said.

“We are encouraging every school and every student to support their sports programs. It’s a unique identity for the Benedictines and Bedans.”

Aleman also urged the league’s athletes to make the most of the opportunity as they represent their respective schools throughout the season.

“To all athletes, give it your all. Show the world who you are,” he said.
