If the cross-country dash in a bright yellow VW bus from Little Miss Sunshine taught us anything, it’s that the unpredictable journey is often the best part of the trip. Today’s travelers are taking that sentiment to heart, with global car rental bookings surging 81 percent over the past year as people swap fixed itineraries for the freedom and personalization of self-drive exploration.
Global booking surges and top destinations
Information provided by Agoda reveals that Japan is leading the global self-drive boom, appealing to travelers looking to venture beyond major city centers into the open roads of Hokkaido and the scenic coastal routes of Mount Fuji. Across the globe, specific countries and cities are seeing massive spikes in self-drive interest:
•Top Countries: South Korea experienced the highest year-over-year growth at 148 percent, followed closely by Japan at 119 percent. Australia, Thailand and the United States also saw strong increases of 74 percent, 59 percent and 54 percent respectively.
•Top Cities: Japanese cities dominate the urban growth charts, with Tokyo surging 156 percent, Sapporo up 129 percent, Fukuoka rising 88 percent and Okinawa increasing 87 percent. Meanwhile, Jeju in South Korea saw a massive 148 percent jump.
•European Growth: While the Asia-Pacific region dominates, Europe is experiencing a major influx of road-trippers drawn to scenic routes. Italy led the region with an 88 percent increase, followed by Spain at 80 percent and Germany at 75 percent.
Asia-Pacific drives the trend
Travelers from the Asia-Pacific region are the primary catalysts for overseas rental demand, favoring cross-border road trips that connect city breaks with coastal drives at a slower pace.
•Taiwan leads the source markets with a massive 139 percent year-over-year growth in car rental demand.
•Japan and South Korea followed closely, recording increases of 113 percent and 85 percent respectively.
•Thailand and Hong Kong also emerged as key contributors, posting growth rates of 78 percent and 62 percent.
Vehicle preferences and evolving travel styles
As road trips expand into versatile travel scenarios, practical vehicle choices dominate. Families with young children now represent over half of all road trip bookings, driven heavily by travelers aged 25 to 44.
Sedans remain the most popular choice, accounting for 52 percent of all bookings. SUVs make up 29 percent of the market share, while passenger vans account for 17 percent.
On Trip.com’s community platform, content for family road trips jumped 309 percent year-over-year. Similarly, campervan and RV travel rose by 220 percent, and pet-friendly road trips increased by 209 percent.
The average booking lead time has extended by approximately a week compared to last year. Travelers are also prioritizing peace of mind, driving a 131 percent increase in rental insurance purchases.
A staggering 95 percent of bookings are for automatic vehicles, with the vast majority prepaid online for a frictionless pickup experience.
Sharing the open road
Road trips are increasingly about the digital memories shared along the way. Nature-focused routes generate the highest engagement on travel platforms, and video content detailing these drives now receives more than triple the interactions of standard photo posts. From winding coastal highways to spontaneous countryside escapes, the modern self-drive holiday has become a story meant to be.
