Our Own Odyssey: Monster waves and scorn
The timeless core of Homer’s narrative — now brilliantly re-imagined by Nolan — offers a profound lesson for our times.

As Christopher Nolan’s cinematic masterpiece, The Odyssey, unfurls across the silver screen, viewers are captivated by the mythic struggle of returning home through unforgiving seas, monstrous adversaries and the fickle whims of fate.
Yet, stepping out of the theater into modern-day Manila, one quickly realizes that Filipinos are currently living through their own epic, high-stakes voyage. We do not need ancient Greece to experience tempestuous waters — we need only look at our morning headlines.
Our nation finds itself caught in a modern sea storm. In the halls of power, the noise of an ongoing impeachment complaint reverberates like thunder from Mount Olympus, threatening political stability and splintering public trust.
Outside our borders, the waters are literally hostile: Our brave Coast Guard personnel face aggressive tactics in the West Philippine Sea, quite literally getting whacked by wooden paddles wielded by foreign boaters.
To make matters worse, foreign propaganda campaigns go so far as to depict Filipinos as monkeys in a crude attempt to dehumanize and demean our dignity. Back on land, the everyday citizen faces the relentless pressure of skyrocketing fuel prices, where every trip to the gas station feels like a slow drain on our household survival.
It is easy to feel overwhelmed, enraged, or disheartened by these converging crises. Yet, the timeless core of Homer’s narrative — now brilliantly re-imagined by Nolan — offers a profound lesson for our times.
Odysseus was not defined by the sea monsters, the Sirens, or the treacherous storms that battered his vessel; he was defined by his steadfast resolve, his sharp intellect and his unwavering devotion to returning home.
The insults flung across maritime borders or foreign airwaves reflect nothing on our intrinsic worth — they merely reveal the crude desperation of those who resort to mockery when reason fails.
Like the crew of The Odyssey, our strength as a nation lies in maintaining composure amidst chaos. Political leaders may squabble and fuel prices may surge, but our quiet resilience, collective dignity and sense of community are the anchors that keep us afloat.
We must refuse to let insult reduce us to anger, and instead channel our energy into fortitude, unity and vigilance.
