Ahead of the Senate ruling on petitions to open the transaction records of Vice President Sara Duterte, House prosecutors and two civic groups on Monday pressed the approval of subpoenas for the same.
All maintained that the documents are essential to resolving allegations in the impeachment complaint.
Akbayan Rep. Chel Diokno said he hopes President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. would authorize the release of Duterte’s tax records if required under Section 71 of the National Internal Revenue Code, which generally treats tax documents as confidential unless disclosure is authorized by the President.
“We do hope that in the name of transparency and accountability, the President does provide that agreement or consent,” Diokno said.
The prosecution is seeking the income tax returns of Duterte and her husband, lawyer Manases “Mans” Carpio, to support allegations of unexplained wealth under the second article of impeachment.
Diokno said presidential approval would strengthen the request should the Senate issue subpoenas.
Outside the Senate, the Samahan ng Progresibong Kabataan (SPARK) and Bantay Impeachment separately called on senator-judges to grant the prosecution’s motions and make any financial records obtained publicly available through televised proceedings.
The groups cited Anti-Money Laundering Council findings presented during House hearings alleging P6.7 billion in covered and suspicious transactions involving the couple’s joint accounts from 2005 to 2026, as well as allegations that Duterte failed to fully declare her cash holdings in her Statements of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth.
