Police have filed double-murder charges against six suspects in connection with the April 28 shooting along EDSA that killed businessman Perry Mariano and his driver, officials announced Wednesday.
The Quezon City Police District (QCPD) filed the complaints Monday at the Quezon City Prosecutor’s Office.
In addition to two counts of murder, the suspects face charges for violating the Motorcycle Crime Prevention Act, which penalizes the use of motorcycles in the commission of crimes.
QCPD director Brig. Gen. Randy Glenn Silvio said during a press briefing at Camp Crame that the victims were inside a white Suzuki S-Presso at the corner of Timog Avenue and EDSA when two gunmen on a Yamaha Mio 125 motorcycle opened fire.
Both victims suffered multiple gunshot wounds and died while undergoing treatment at East Avenue Medical Center.
Investigators recovered the abandoned getaway motorcycle on Scout Rallos Street near Ybardolaza Street shortly after the shooting.
A breakthrough in the case came through security camera backtracking, witness statements, digital forensics and intelligence validation.
Police traced the suspects’ movements before the shooting, proving they had monitored the area and visited nearby establishments hours before the attack.
Investigators identified the suspected driver of the getaway motorcycle by tracing a GCash mobile wallet transaction and profiling linked social media accounts.
Forensic ballistic examinations also matched the spent .45-caliber cartridge cases recovered from the EDSA crime scene with ballistics evidence from a previous shooting incident in Arayat, Pampanga.
Investigators believe the motive behind the killings stems from a personal grudge and business-related conflicts.
The complaints were filed by the QCPD Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit and the Kamuning Police Station against six suspects identified by their aliases “Uno,” “Besa,” “Boy,” “Bore,” “Frapa” and “Pajo.”
“The filing of these criminal complaints is a significant step toward securing justice for the victims,” Silvio said, adding that police are continuing operations to locate and arrest the suspects.
Philippine National Police chief Police General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. commended the investigators for their diligence and emphasized the importance of building a airtight case.
“What is important is that the evidence gathered is strong before we file a case,” Nartatez said. “We did not rush, but we ensured the process was done right so that those proven to have broken the law are held accountable.”
