The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Monday said it will continue supporting lawful government-led activities that promote national unity, patriotism and awareness of the country's sovereign rights in the West Philippine Sea (WPS).
The commitment is in line with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s directive, through Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla, to strengthen national unity and support peaceful initiatives that advance the country's sovereign rights and national interest while maintaining public safety and order.
PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. made the statement following the police force's participation in the 2026 National Peace Walk on Sunday at the Quirino Grandstand in Manila.
The event marked the 10th anniversary of the 2016 South China Sea Arbitral Award, which affirmed the Philippines' maritime entitlements under international law. Organized by the National Task Force for the West Philippine Sea, the activity carried the theme "Walking in Unity, Celebrating a Decade of Victory."
Government officials, uniformed personnel and civil society groups joined the peace walk in a show of support for defending the country's sovereignty and national interest.
"While our primary duty remains maintaining peace and order, we also stand with the Filipino people in upholding our national interest through lawful and peaceful means," Nartatez said.
During the event, Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. thanked the PNP, the National Capital Region Police Office and the Department of the Interior and Local Government for supporting the activity.
"We are grateful for Secretary Teodoro's recognition. It reflects the PNP's commitment to support whole-of-government efforts that promote national unity, patriotism and respect for our country's sovereign rights," Nartatez said.
He added that the PNP remains committed to protecting the public, maintaining peace and order, and supporting lawful initiatives that strengthen unity and love of country.
