Mastercard has expanded contactless transit payments in Metro Manila by enabling commuters on Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2) to pay fares directly with their bank cards or mobile wallets, eliminating the need to buy or reload train tickets.
Beginning Monday, 13 July, passengers can use eligible Mastercard credit, debit, or prepaid cards, as well as NFC-enabled mobile wallets linked to Mastercard, by simply tapping at designated Fast Lanes before boarding the train.
The rollout is part of broader efforts to modernize fare collection in the capital, making public transportation faster, more convenient, and more secure through open-loop payment technology.
The new feature adds to LRT-2's existing digital payment options, which include mobile NFC payments, GCash Commute QR, and credit, debit, and prepaid card transactions. Mastercard users can now use the same cards or digital wallets they already carry for everyday purchases to access the rail system.
“Public transportation is part of everyday life for millions of Filipinos, and paying for a ride should be just as effortless. With Mastercard contactless payments now available on LRT-2, we're making everyday travel more seamless and secure, helping commuters save time and move through their journeys with greater confidence,” said Jason Crasto, Mastercard country manager for the Philippines.
Mastercard said the service also supports compatible issuer mobile wallets on NFC-enabled Android devices, giving passengers additional ways to pay without cash or physical tickets.
Each transaction is protected by Mastercard's security features, providing commuters with a fast and secure payment experience while reducing the need for ticket purchases and reloads.
The expansion marks another milestone in the adoption of contactless transit payments across Metro Manila as transport operators, financial institutions, and payment technology providers continue to collaborate on improving commuter experience and expanding cashless mobility.
Globally, Mastercard has supported open-loop transit systems that allow passengers to use their existing bank cards or eligible mobile devices instead of dedicated transit cards. In the Philippines, the company said it will continue working with industry partners to broaden access to interoperable and secure digital payment solutions for public transportation.
