The registered owner of a sport utility vehicle involved in a recent fatal hit-and-run in Mandaluyong City is not a member of Congress, the House of Representatives secretary general said Monday.
The clarification followed social media backlash after dashboard camera footage of the incident showed a Toyota Land Cruiser sporting a House of Representatives security sticker over its conduction plate.
A motorcycle passenger was killed in the crash.
“Based on verification conducted with the records of the Land Transportation Office, the registered owner is not a member of the House,” House Secretary General Cheloy Garafil said in a statement.
“There is also no record that the vehicle was ever issued an official vehicle pass for the 19th or 20th Congress,” she added.
Garafil expressed condolences to the family of the victim and noted that congressional officials are cooperating with law enforcement.
“The House of Representatives extends its deepest condolences to the family of the victim who died in the tragic accident,” Garafil said. “The concerned authorities are continuing to investigate the incident to shed full light on the events.”
The Land Transportation Office has issued a show-cause order to both the registered owner and the driver of the SUV.
The agency is weighing potential administrative charges, including tampering with authorized motor vehicle license plates, reckless driving, and operating a motor vehicle as an improper person.
