A woman riding pillion on a motorcycle was killed after an SUV slammed into their vehicle and fled the scene along Ortigas Avenue in Mandaluyong City before dawn Friday, triggering a police chase that ended with the driver's arrest in neighboring San Juan City.
The fatal crash occurred at around 4 a.m. on the westbound lane of Ortigas Avenue in front of La Salle Green Hills, according to the San Juan City Police.
Authorities said the white SUV struck the motorcycle, throwing its occupants onto the road, before speeding away without stopping to assist the victims.
The female passenger died from her injuries. Police have yet to release her identity pending notification of her family. The condition of the motorcycle driver was not immediately disclosed.
Police tracked the fleeing SUV to Greenhills in San Juan City, where officers arrested the male driver inside the compound of a shopping mall after he allegedly attempted to evade authorities.
Investigators said the suspect was cornered with the help of San Juan police officers, whose station is located near the area where the SUV was intercepted.
The victim's body remained at the crash site for several hours as investigators documented the scene and gathered evidence. It was removed at around 7 a.m.
The wrecked motorcycle and debris littered the westbound lanes of Ortigas Avenue, forcing authorities to temporarily close portions of the road from the Ortigas Flyover toward Quezon City. The lane closures caused traffic to build up during the morning rush hour.
The arrested driver will be turned over to the Mandaluyong City Police, which is conducting the investigation and preparing the appropriate criminal charges in connection with the fatal hit-and-run.###
