A woman riding on the back of a motorcycle was killed early Friday in Mandaluyong City after a sport utility vehicle struck the vehicle and sped away, triggering a police chase that ended with the driver’s arrest in neighboring San Juan City.
The fatal crash occurred at around 4 a.m. in the westbound lane of Ortigas Avenue in front of the La Salle Green Hills campus, according to the San Juan City Police.
Authorities said the white SUV struck the motorcycle, throwing both riders onto the pavement, before speeding away without stopping to help.
The female passenger died from her injuries at the scene. Police withheld her identity pending the notification of her family. The condition of the motorcycle driver was not immediately released.
Police tracked the fleeing SUV to the Greenhills district in San Juan, where officers cornered and arrested the male driver inside a shopping mall compound after he allegedly tried to evade authorities.
San Juan police officers, whose station is located near the interception site, assisted in stopping the vehicle.
The victim’s body remained at the crash site for three hours while investigators documented the scene and gathered evidence before it was removed at around 7 a.m.
The wrecked motorcycle and debris littered the westbound lanes of Ortigas Avenue, forcing authorities to temporarily close portions of the road from the Ortigas Flyover toward Quezon City.
Lane closures caused heavy traffic congestion during the morning rush hour.
The arrested driver will be turned over to the Mandaluyong City Police, which is handling the investigation and preparing criminal charges.
