The Philippine National Police (PNP) will install a memorial marker inside its national headquarters for Jee Ick Joo, the South Korean businessman who was abducted and killed by rogue police officers inside the camp a decade ago.
The decision follows a request from the victim’s widow, Choi Kyung Jin, who visited Camp Crame on Wednesday alongside South Korean Ambassador to the Philippines Lee Sang-hwa and other South Korean officials.
PNP Chief Police General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. formally granted the request during the visit.
Choi expressed gratitude to the Philippine government, Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla, Nartatez, and Lee for fulfilling her wish.
“I never expected it to actually come true,” Choi said through an interpreter. “I simply made the request because I hoped there would be a place to honor and remember my husband. The fact that it has become a reality feels like an absolute dream right now.”
Nartatez said the marker will be placed within the grounds of the Police Community Affairs and Development Group to ensure the family has a dedicated space to visit and remember Jee.
Jee was abducted from his Angeles City home by rogue officers in October 2016 and strangled to death inside Camp Crame hours later, an incident that drew international outrage during the peak of the Duterte administration’s anti-drug campaign.
Choi also expressed deep relief over the recent arrest of the suspected mastermind, former police Lt. Col. Rafael Dumlao III, who was captured in June after two years on the run.
Speaking in Korean, Choi admitted she had harbored doubts about the government’s resolve while Dumlao remained at large.
“I was relieved that the culprit was finally apprehended, and it made me realize that the Philippine government had actually been making an effort to arrest him,” Choi said, adding that the arrest has finally given her family a sense of closure. “With Dumlao finally being arrested after such a long time, I felt that my husband could finally find some peace.”
