Around 150 Novo Ecijanos showed their support for rising Filipina tennis player Alex Eala by watching her Wimbledon match during a viewing party at SM City Cabanatuan on 6 July 2026.
According to Public Relations Manager Sheen Eugenio, the viewing party was part of SM Supermalls' effort to promote national pride and provide a venue where everyone could cheer for and support the Philippines' top female tennis player.
“Before Eala took center stage, the crowd first came together to watch and cheer for Gilas Pilipinas in its FIBA World Cup game, turning the evening into a celebration of Filipino excellence in sports. The back-to-back live screenings brought together families, students, sports enthusiasts, and mallgoers, all united by their support for Filipino athletes competing on the international stage,” she added.
Participants in the viewing party waved miniature Philippine flags as they witnessed Eala’s historic fourth-round match against Italy’s Jasmine Paolini.
“Every point won by the young Filipina was met with thunderous applause as supporters proudly waved the Philippine flag, chanted her name, and celebrated each hard-earned point,” Eugenio said.
The crowd erupted when Eala claimed the second set, believing another comeback was within reach. Despite the late hour, supporters remained glued to the screen, refusing to leave as they rallied behind the country’s tennis sensation until the final point.
Although Eala eventually bowed out of the tournament, the result did little to dampen the spirits of those in attendance. Instead of disappointment, the match ended with heartfelt applause and words of encouragement. For many, Eala’s courage, determination, and fighting spirit outweighed the final score.
“Panalo ka pa rin sa amin,” one supporter remarked as the crowd slowly dispersed.
The viewing party, which stretched close to midnight, became more than a gathering to watch world-class sporting events. It became a celebration of Filipino pride and unity, with strangers cheering together for athletes carrying the country’s colors on the global stage.
As the lights dimmed and the crowd made their way home, one sentiment was shared by many: every minute spent cheering for Gilas Pilipinas and Alex Eala was worth it. While Eala’s Wimbledon journey ended that night, the pride she brought to the country—and the unwavering support shown by the people of Nueva Ecija—will be remembered long after the final rally.
