The historical epic Quezon dominated the 9th Entertainment Editors’ Choice Awards (The Eddys), emerging as the biggest winner of the night after capturing the coveted Best Picture award along with several of the ceremony’s highest honors.
The acclaimed biographical film also earned Best Director for Jerrold Tarog, Best Actor for Jericho Rosales, Best Screenplay and Best Production Design, making it the most awarded film of the evening.
Receiving his Best Actor trophy, Rosales expressed his gratitude for the recognition and reflected on the challenges of bringing the life of President Manuel L. Quezon to the screen.
“I always attend award ceremonies like this to express my gratitude. For you to give us this recognition means so much to us. We are simply doing our job, and we understand that every great achievement comes with challenges.”
The actor also dedicated his award to the entire Quezon team before paying tribute to his family, especially his mother, who has Alzheimer’s disease.
“My mother is not watching this because she has Alzheimer’s. This is for you, Mom. I love you so much. To my family, whenever life becomes difficult, I want you to know that you are my greatest purpose. I became an actor because of all of you.”
One of the night’s most heartfelt moments came when Maris Racal accepted the Best Actress award for her acclaimed performance in Sunshine. She spoke about how deeply she related to her character’s struggles and dedicated the honor to women and dreamers who have faced setbacks.
“Sunshine is a young woman with enormous potential, big dreams and a bright future, but she stumbled and made mistakes. That story feels very familiar to me. I know what it feels like to lose everything and to question whether you should keep going. But through Sunshine’s journey, she chose to keep her dreams alive. This award is for every Sunshine in the world — for every woman, for our right to choose ourselves, and for everyone who has fallen. Get back up and keep moving forward.”
The supporting acting categories also recognized memorable performances. Rochelle Pangilinan won Best Supporting Actress for Child No. 82, while Will Ashley (Bar Boys: After School) and Rico Blanco (Manila’s Finest) shared the Best Supporting Actor award in a rare tie.
The Eddys also honored achievements beyond the competitive categories. Vice Ganda, Maricel Soriano, Joshua Garcia, Kim Chiu, Paulo Avelino and Richard Gutierrez were recognized as Box Office Heroes, while industry veterans John Arcilla, Edgar Mortiz, Rio Locsin and Janice de Belen received the prestigious Eddys Movie Icons Award for their lasting contributions to Philippine cinema.
