The Quezon City Police District (QCPD) on Thursday debunked viral social media posts alleging a shooting incident at a school in Barangay Bagong Silangan, while village officials separate town dispelled a synchronized rumor about a campus stabbing.
Both incidents triggered widespread panic among parents and students before authorities declared the campuses secure.
In the first incident, personnel from the Bagong Silangan Police Station were attending a scheduled meeting with school administrators at about 9 a.m. Thursday when they heard a loud commotion on the building’s second floor.
A police assessment revealed that students had mistaken a loud banging sound from a nearby construction site for gunfire.
Investigators confirmed the noise was caused by standard construction activities and that no weapon had been discharged.
Normal school activities resumed shortly after police declared the scene safe. No injuries were reported.
Meanwhile, classes at nearby Bagong Silangan High School were heavily disrupted Thursday morning after separate false reports of a stabbing incident spread across campus via SMS and social media posts, prompting alarmed parents to pull their children out of class ahead of dismissal.
Barangay Bagong Silangan chairperson Wilfredo Cara clarified in a radio interview that no violent incident occurred at the high school.
“In truth, there was no stabbing and nothing happened. That’s fake news,” Cara said.
Cara said that while classes were never officially suspended, the school grounds became chaotic after students began texting each other and posting unverified claims that someone had been cornered or stabbed.
