DENR clarifies Buaya River dredging project

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region I on Tuesday clarified that the ongoing activity at Buaya River in Sta. Cruz, Ilocos Sur is a river restoration and flood control project involving dredging, following concerns raised on social media over the operation.
According to the agency, the project is being implemented by Fortuna Mining Corporation under a contract with the Provincial Government of Ilocos Sur.
The DENR said the dredging operation has secured clearance from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Regional Office I, as well as all required permits, clearances, and authorizations under Joint Memorandum Circular No. 2019-01 and DENR Administrative Order No. 2020-07, which govern dredging activities in waterways.
The agency added that the transport, handling, and disposal of dredged materials remain subject to strict regulatory oversight and must comply with existing environmental laws, permit conditions, and other government regulations.
The DENR said it continues to monitor the project's implementation, together with concerned implementing and regulatory agencies, to ensure compliance with environmental safeguards and legal requirements.
The agency also reiterated its commitment to transparency, environmental protection, and the responsible implementation of river restoration and flood risk reduction projects. It urged the public to rely on information released through official government channels and to report verified concerns to the appropriate authorities.
Meanwhile, social media users noted that comments on the DENR Region I's Facebook post containing the clarification had been restricted, preventing the public from posting replies directly to the announcement.
