  • Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Vince Dizon has ordered inspections and repairs of all national bridges nationwide.

Dizon issued a memorandum dated 1 September directing all DPWH regional directors and district engineers to conduct the inspections and undertake necessary repairs.

“Immediately conduct inspection and assessment of all national bridges within their respective jurisdictions, prioritizing those with significant scouring, exposed or undermined foundations, affected abutments, and other signs of distress that may compromise structural stability or lead to possible collapse,” the memorandum read.

Dizon also ordered “immediate and appropriate measures” for bridges found to be at risk, including necessary traffic restrictions, emergency protection works, repairs and other interventions to ensure public safety and prevent further deterioration or damage.

Dizon ordered the official to submit reports on the actions taken within 15 days of the memorandum’s issuance.

He explained the move was made due to “the continues rains brought about by the southwest monsoon (habagat).”

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announced that the national government will provide P300 million to the Tarlac City government to reconstruct the damaged Aquino and Aganan bridges.

The span serves as a vital thoroughfare for residents and motorists.

Without the bridge, travel time to Tarlac City from Gerona would take one and a half hours, which is why the President said reconstruction should be finished as soon as possible.
