Ibaloy group apologizes over singer’s IVF joke

BAGUIO CITY — An indigenous peoples group has issued an apology following controversy over remarks made by a country music singer during the recent Ibaloy Day celebration.

Onjon ni Ivadoy Inc. (Unity of Ibaloys) acknowledged public concerns over comments made by performer Romeo Ogong that were perceived as offensive and inconsistent with the dignity of the cultural event.

In a statement, the organization apologized to the people of Baguio, particularly those who were offended by the jokes delivered during the celebration. It said Ibaloy Day is meant to honor heritage and identity, and any behavior that detracts from that purpose is deeply regretted.

The group also committed to implementing stricter screening processes for future performers to prevent similar incidents and ensure that upcoming events uphold the values and traditions of the Ibaloy community.

The controversy stemmed from Ogong’s remarks about his willingness to provide his sperm through in vitro fertilization, which drew criticism from local officials and members of the public.

Baguio City Councilor Betty Lourdes Tabanda formally condemned the statements, describing them as distasteful and disrespectful to the audience and the occasion.

Tabanda said crude language and references to in vitro fertilization had no place in a cultural celebration meant to highlight the identity and history of the city’s indigenous peoples.

She urged event organizers and performers to observe higher standards of conduct during public festivities, emphasizing that community gatherings should remain inclusive and respectful.

The councilor said the incident should serve as a reminder to protect traditional celebrations from inappropriate behavior and ensure that public performances reflect the values of the host community.
