The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported that there are no signs of a potential tsunami following an earthquake off the coast of Borneo early Monday morning.
A magnitude 6.8 tremor was initially detected by Phivolcs on the northeastern side of Borneo at around 12:58 a.m.
Despite the earthquake’s strength, the agency said it does not pose a threat to residents in the Philippines.
“No destructive tsunami threat exists based on available data,” Phivolcs said.
The assessment was supported by the United States Geological Survey (USGS), which stated that the depth of the earthquake did not warrant any tsunami activity.
USGS also noted that the likelihood of casualties or significant damage from the earthquake was low.
