Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) announced Saturday morning that Mike Philips is considered as a local by FIBA and is eligible to play in any of the tournaments sanctioned by the governing body.
In its statement, SBP first expressed its gratitude to FIBA "for its swift action in hearing our request and classifying Mike Phillips as a player without restriction.”
“Handa na po akong lumaban para sa ating bansa! Ibibigay ko lahat ng kaya ko at ang buong puso ko! I cannot wait to compete alongside my fellow Filipinos as we continue pushing Philippine basketball forward,” Philips said.
The 6-foot-6 big man’s recent outing while donning the tricolor was in the 2023 Southeast Asian Games in Cambodia where he helped the squad in reclaiming the gold medal.
The UAAP Season 88 Finals MVP separately thanked the world’s basketball governing body, Philippines’ national basketball bureau, and everyone who supported his process.
“It’s a blessing and a huge honor to officially be eligible to represent the Philippines. The opportunity to play for the national team is a longtime dream and an answered prayer.” he stated.
After steering the Green Archers to their 11th UAAP championship last December, Philips was not able to suit up for Gilas Pilipinas in the 2025 Southeast Asian Games after Thai governing bodies red flagged his citizenship.
