‘No Work, No Pay’ bill gains support

Lawmakers from the House of Representatives’ “Young Guns” bloc expressed support for a proposal seeking to implement a strict “no work, no pay” policy for members of Congress.

The measure, House Bill 7432 or the “No Work, No Pay for Members of Congress Act,” was filed by House Majority Leader Sandro Marcos.

Deputy Speaker Paolo Ortega V said the bill addresses fairness, stressing that public funds should be released only when public service is rendered.

“This bill simply ensures that public money is spent only when public work is done,” Ortega said, adding that compensation in public office should correspond to actual legislative service.

He said the proposal is an institutional reform and not directed at any individual or political group.

“This is an institutional reform, not a partisan measure. Clear rules that apply to everyone protect both the institution and its members,” he said.

Lanao del Sur Rep. Zia Alonto Adiong said the proposal places lawmakers under standards observed by private sector workers.

“If this principle applies to workers nationwide, it should apply even more to those crafting the laws,” Adiong said.

Deputy Speaker Jay Khonghun said the bill promotes discipline in Congress.

“This is not about punishment — it is about professional discipline in lawmaking,” Khonghun said.
