Nartatez: Allegations won’t derail hunt for Atong Ang

Malicious allegations will not derail the Philippine National Police’s (PNP) efforts to locate fugitive businessman Atong Ang, according to PNP acting chief Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr..

Nartatez said Wednesday that the police force remains focused on its mandate despite what he described as unfounded accusations related to the pursuit of Ang.

“We are mindful of all the allegations involving the integrity of the PNP. We verify and immediately take action as part of our efforts to sustain the trust and confidence of the Filipino people to their police force,” Nartatez said in a statement.

The acting police chief stressed that such claims would not distract law enforcers from their work.

“Our personnel will not be distracted by these unfounded accusations. Walang pruweba ang sinumang nagaakusa sa atin nang ganito,” he added.

Nartatez also denied allegations that the police are withholding information on Ang’s whereabouts to claim the P10-million reward offered for his arrest.

“Nakafocus tayo sa paghahanap kay Atong Ang at gaya ng mga pamilya ng mga nawawalang sabungero, gusto rin nating mapanagot ang tunay na nasa likod ng kanilang pagkawala,” he said.

He warned that anyone found assisting a fugitive would face legal consequences, noting that penalties are more severe for erring police officers and other government personnel.

Ang is facing multiple arrest warrants issued by courts in Santa Cruz, Laguna, and Lipa City, Batangas in connection with the missing sabungeros case. Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla earlier announced a P10-million bounty for Ang’s arrest.

All 21 of Ang’s co-accused, including 12 active police officers, have already been apprehended.

Nartatez said the PNP has deployed sufficient resources nationwide to locate Ang and commended police officers working continuously to secure his arrest.
