Cebu City is gearing up for the annual Sinulog Festival, and the Philippine National Police (PNP) is assuring the public that security will be tight as thousands of devotees and tourists are expected to join the festivities this month.
PNP acting chief Police Lieutenant General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said police units in Cebu and nearby areas have been directed to carry out a well-coordinated deployment to ensure peace and order throughout the celebrations.
He also instructed local police to work closely with local government units and other agencies to guarantee that all Sinulog-related activities run smoothly.
“While our forces in Metro Manila are busy with the Feast of the Black Nazarene, we’re making sure the same level of security is in place here in Cebu for this important religious and cultural event,” Nartatez said.
The Cebu City government has confirmed that safety measures are ready for both the cultural activities of the Sinulog Festival and the religious celebrations of the Feast of Señor Santo Niño on 18 January. The day will feature a grand parade, beginning with a Holy Mass led by Archbishop Emeritus Jose Palma.
Nartatez noted that no specific threats have been reported, but police units will remain on heightened alert throughout the festival.
“The security measures are set, but as with any major event, our ground commanders will make real-time adjustments if needed,” he said. “All of this is to ensure that our kababayan in Cebu can enjoy a peaceful and meaningful celebration.”
