The Philippine National Police welcomed the stance of the Association of Generals and Flag Officers (AGFO) in rejecting destabilization efforts against the current government. The group is composed of retired uniformed personnel from various service branches.
In a statement over the weekend, AGFO denounced calls for destabilization and emphasized that retired uniformed personnel, even in retirement, remain committed to the Constitution and civilian supremacy. The group cited Article XVI, Section 5 of the Constitution, which mandates that the military must stay out of partisan politics.
Acting PNP Chief Police Lieutenant General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. welcomed the statement of the retired officials and highlighted that the PNP today is a byproduct of the values passed among officers over the years. He also vowed that the police force will continue focusing on serving and protecting the people in the coming years.
“The Philippine National Police today is a product of the hard work, sacrifices and reforms geared towards integrity, discipline and professionalism over the years. We will remain focused on our mandate of serving and protecting the people, and do more to shape the future of the country’s police force,” PLTGEN Nartatez said.
“We fully respect the stand of the retired generals as some of them also went through the same challenges when they were still active in the service. We take their words of wisdom as a guiding light to continue performing our sworn duty to the Filipino people,” he added.
On Sunday, the Armed Forces of the Philippines made the same remark to AGFO and lauded their declaration of rejection to any destabilization efforts.
“The AFP extends its sincere appreciation to AGFO for their 'Manifesto of Unwavering Support and Solidarity.' This expression of confidence from leaders who dedicated the prime of their lives to service, deeply affirms the shared commitment of both active and retired officers to uphold the Constitution, respect civilian authority, and preserve the professionalism of the military institution," the AFP said in a statement.
The AFP highlighted that the message is a strong reminder that unity within the ranks, from past to present, remains one of the military's greatest strengths. It added that the stance of AGFO will reinforce the principal guide of every uniformed department.
“The unified voice of our retired and active leaders reaffirms that the AFP remains a pillar of stability and a steadfast guardian of democracy,” the agency said.
