Video gamers shouting for backup may soon get help from generative AI, as French game developer Ubisoft tests voice-responsive artificial teammates in its Paris research lab.

In a hall surrounded by screens, a player directs two computer-controlled allies — “Pablo” and “Sofia” — as his character navigates a sci-fi base filled with armed robots. The system is part of Ubisoft’s “Teammates” project, which allows players to command AI squad members using natural voice instructions.

Ubisoft began experimenting with generative AI in late 2022, shortly after ChatGPT drew global attention for its human-like responses. The company, known for the “Assassin’s Creed” and “Rainbow Six” franchises, later introduced so-called “Neo NPCs” designed for dynamic, open-ended dialogue. “Teammates” is its next step.

Project chief Xavier Manzanares said the technology “will redefine how you interact,” adding that squad control through voice commands could make gameplay more fluid and reactive.

More than 80 specialists — from game designers to AI engineers — are contributing to the system, which Ubisoft aims to integrate into future titles rather than launch as a standalone product.

Built on Google’s Gemini 3 large language model, the AI teammates can follow orders, give tactical suggestions, converse with players, and even recount their fictional backgrounds. Developers assign each AI character a “character sheet” to maintain consistent personality and tone.

“What we want is for players to build a relationship with them,” said narrative designer Anais Desfachelles.
