Muntinlupa City rolled out the country’s first citywide early warning system for the deaf and hard of hearing called the Beacon Light.
According to the Muntinlupa City LGU, the Beacon Light uses colored LED lights to send visual alerts according to the different types of hazards such as earthquakes, typhoons, and other emergencies.
Once activated, the color-coded signals flash across public areas to warn residents of possible centers.
The initiative was led by the Department of Disaster Resilience and Management (DDRM). It aims to ensure information reaches everyone.
Muntinlupa Mayor Ruffy Biazon said the project emphasizes the goal of making preparedness inclusive to the needs of Muntinlupa residents.
”Preparedness should be inclusive. Through this first-of-its kind system, we’re making sure that every Muntinlupeño, especially those who cannot hear sirens or public announcements, receives life-saving warnings when it matters most,” Biazon said.
The pilot phase includes 20 Beacon Lights in place in schools, health centers, and major roads. The city plans to expand its coverage in partnership with the Persons with Disability Affairs Office.
The Beacon Lights also complement Muntinlupa’s 17 existing Early Warning System sirens that deliver audio alerts in case of emergencies.
