The producers behind the much-talked-about film Quezon have issued an official statement following criticisms raised during a post-screening talkback, where one of President Manuel L. Quezon’s descendants shared his personal views about the movie.
In their statement, the filmmakers said they respect the Quezon family’s sentiments but maintained that the film is based on credible historical sources.
“At the recent talkback session for the film, one of President Manuel L. Quezon’s descendants expressed his views on the movie. While we respect and understand his sentiments, we wish to reiterate that the film is grounded in verified historical accounts, including President Quezon’s own autobiography and other reputable sources,” the statement read.
They explained that while certain creative liberties were taken for storytelling, these did not distort the truth.
“While the film includes fictional elements for thematic purposes, the facts and details presented in the film are easily verifiable through public records, online research, or library resources,” the producers said.
To promote transparency, the filmmakers released a Study Guide and Companion Book containing references and materials used during the film’s research.
“We encourage everyone to watch the movie so they can form their own opinions and join the ongoing conversation about the film, our history, and how it continues to resonate today,” they added.
The statement concluded with a call for reflection and unity through cinema:
“We hope that #QUEZON can continue to inspire meaningful dialogue, reflection, and a deeper appreciation of our nation’s past.”
The film, which explores President Manuel L. Quezon’s political and personal struggles during a turbulent period in Philippine history, has drawn both praise and debate for its portrayal of leadership and heroism.
