About 7.5 million Filipinos are projected to have diabetes by 2045 as Type 2 diabetes remains a growing concern in the Philippines,

Despite readily available treatments like insulin, Type 2 diabetes is the fifth leading cause of death in the Philippines.

Dr. Gian Tenorio, medical health of Sanofi Philippines, attributed this to patients delaying care due to fear, guilt, or misconceptions.

That is why he is encouraging newly diagnosed patients to empower themselves with knowledge about the disease, stressing the importance of health literacy.

"When patients understand their condition and the treatment options available to them, it helps them become more open to making informed decisions and more confident in following their doctor's advice," Tenorio explained.

The physician said that Type 2 diabetes, the most common form of the disease, is often linked to lifestyle factors. However, it is typically managed through healthy diet, exercise, and oral medications.

If blood sugar remains uncontrolled, doctors may recommend other treatment options such as insulin to help manage condition.

Unfortunately for some, misinformation or common beliefs, such as the idea that insulin is a "last resort" or a sign of failure on the patient's part, can cause patients to delay treatment prescribed by their doctor, Tenorio pointed out.

But, he stressed, insulin therapy is one of several options that doctors may recommend to keep the blood sugar levels within the target range.

“Effective diabetes care begins with the right information. Your doctor is the best source for medical advice, as it’s personalized based on your condition,” Tenorio said.

“Aside from your doctor, if you need educational materials on diabetes management, get these only from trusted, science-backed

resources. Up-to-date, easy-to-understand, credible information based on science is crucial for our health and wellbeing as you navigate life with diabetes," he added.

Ultimately, better health starts with better understanding of your condition, he continued, noting that with the right information, support system, and guidance from their doctor, patients "can confidently take control of their diabetes and continue living life to the fullest."
