The Marcos administration has tapped Sofronio Vasquez to sing the national anthem at the upcoming State of the Nation Address (SONA) of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
This is the latest in a long list of stellar achievements by Vasquez, who became the first Filipino and first Asian winner of the singing competition The Voice in the United States.
Vasquez’s role in Marcos’ fourth SONA is seen as a tribute to Filipino talent and national pride.
Before his historic win, he competed in the second season of Tawag ng Tanghalan in 2017, finishing as a finalist. He later returned for the show’s all-star edition in 2019, where he placed third.
Despite his international fame, Vasquez remains humble—grounded in his roots in Misamis Occidental.
In addition to being a talented singer, Vasquez holds a Doctor of Dental Medicine degree from Ozamiz City, Misamis Occidental, and used his knowledge to work as a dental assistant in the United States.
In January, Vasquez visited Malacañang at the invitation of the President and First Lady. During the engagement, he performed timeless classics such as Imagine by The Beatles and his winning rendition of A Million Dreams from the film The Greatest Showman.
Marcos will deliver his fourth State of the Nation Address on 28 July 2025 at the Batasang Pambansa.
