The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) announced Sunday that it is aiming for improved disaster response capabilities in coordination with other government agencies, anticipating strong tropical cyclones.
In a radio interview, AFP spokesperson Col. Francel Padilla stated that unified commands and task forces are working closely with the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office to prepare for emergencies.
“We have pre-positioned assets and personnel in high-risk areas that can be easily deployed in times of emergencies,” Padilla said.
She added that military officers are undergoing consistent training to ensure they can adapt to various operations.
“Our regular and advanced training for disaster response, including water search and rescue, casualty evacuation and even first aid. These initiatives are being done to ensure our readiness in various scenarios,” Padilla said.
Last week, Civil Defense spokesperson Atty. Noel Bendijo stressed the need to strengthen disaster preparations, referencing the series of storms that impacted the country last year.
Earlier this month, the state weather bureau Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration announced the onset of the southwest monsoon, indicating a likelihood of more frequent thunderstorms in the afternoons and evenings.
Despite a late start to the tropical cyclone season, at least 19 to 20 tropical cyclones are expected to affect the Philippines this year.
