The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) will install 3,000 trash traps across Metro Manila waterways as part of government efforts to reduce urban flooding ahead of the next rainy season, officials announced Friday.

DPWH Secretary Giovanni Lopez issued the directive following instructions from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to accelerate the implementation of “Oplan Kontra Baha,” a multi-agency campaign focused on clearing debris from clogged drainage systems and river tributaries across the capital region.

Under the project, DPWH field offices will deploy trash interception traps along 78 major waterways in Metro Manila, supported by partner government agencies and local municipal units.

Lopez also called on Metro Manila local government units to strictly enforce solid waste management ordinances and hold individuals caught illegally dumping garbage into rivers and esteros accountable.
